MyTime: supporting parents of children with a disability

MyTime is a unique national program created in 2006 by the Parenting Research Centre. MyTime supports parents of children aged 0-16 who have a disability, developmental delay or chronic medical condition.

The program provides facilitated peer support in a group setting. Mothers, fathers and carers meet, learn from each other, support each other and find out about other local support and services.

While skilled facilitators help run the groups, play helpers engage children in appropriate play activities.

We coordinate the delivery of the service and develop resources to help facilitators guide group discussions. MyTime groups are run by partner agencies across Australia. Over 6000 people have attended over the life of the program.

Our research into how MyTime benefits parents and carers found the following results:

  • 90% were highly satisfied with how their groups are run
  • 80% said that resources provided in groups are useful
  • 79% felt that groups help them feel supported in their caring role
  • 77% developed relationships with other parents and carers of children with disability or chronic medical conditions.
