Contextual Influences on Parenting and Child Outcomes

Is the impact of socioeconomic disadvantage on parenting practices and child outcomes mediated by contextual social factors such as parent mental health and social support?

This research project is examining relationships between socioeconomic disadvantage, parent mental health, social support, parenting practices, and outcomes for children using a nationally representative dataset of Australian children collected through the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC).

Evidence suggests that the association between socioeconomic disadvantage and parenting practices is largely mediated by factors such as parent mental health and social support. However, the way in which contextual factors interact with parenting to influence parenting practices and child wellbeing is not well understood.

The use of the nationally representative LSAC dataset to model pathways between socioeconomic disadvantage, parent mental health, social support, parenting practices and child outcomes presents a unique opportunity to understand parenting in Australia in its social context.
