ABCD: Parenting Young Adolescents

The ABCD Arabic material has been adapted for the Australian Sudanese community and is now being delivered by trained Sudanese community members.

Adolescence is a time of change and challenge – both for young people and their parents. ABCD: Parenting Young Adolescents is a program for parents with children in the early years of adolescence. It was developed in collaboration with UnitingCare Moreland Hall.

ABCD is a unique program that encourages parents to spend time enjoying activities and interests with their children. It aims to reduce negative adolescent behaviour, develop trusting relationships between parents and young people, and lessen the incidence of depression, anxiety and stress in parents.

The ABCD program is now available in seven community languages. In 2010, the Arabic material was adapted for the Australian Sudanese community. This resource aims to help families maintain their traditional bonds and reduce the incidence of risk-taking behaviours in adolescents. All parent materials are available on the ABCD website and trained facilitators can download program notes and keep up to date with the latest news.
