Title: Fathers matter
Author: Parenting Research Centre
Being a father is one of the most rewarding life experiences a man can have.
Our booklet Fathers matter describes the rewards and benefits of choosing to be an involved father. Fathers matter offers practical information on bonding with your children, rough and tumble play, and parenting after separation. The booklet also has an extensive list of the services for fathers.
Research shows that fathers can do more than just ‘babysit’ or play a supporting role in the family. They can become as competent as their partners in parenting their children. Plus research is beginning to identify the unique contribution that fathers make to the development and wellbeing of their children.
We are learning how important ‘father play’ is to children. When fathers engage in active, physical or rough and tumble play it's good for children’s physical wellbeing, and it also provides important lessons in social interaction. In fact, involvement and hands-on experience is the best way to develop confidence and competence as a parent.
