ABCD Project
Details

The Centre worked in partnership with Uniting Care Moreland Hall to develop and disseminate this new and innovative parent education program across Victoria. The project titled ABCD was funded by the Victorian Department of Human Services as part of the Commonwealth Department of Family and Community Services National Illicit Drug Strategy.

The program is designed for parents who have children between the ages of around 12-14. It aims to provide parents with information, skills and strategies for developing and maintaining trusting, positive and accepting relationships with their young adolescents. The program encourages parents to allow their children to develop their independence within safe limits, and thus minimise the chances of their adolescent children engaging in high-risk activites such as drug misuse.

The ABCD program is based on sound theoretical models of parent education, acceptance, risk, resilience and self-regulation. It can be delivered as either a four-session program (ABCD) or as a six-session program (ABCDPlus). The program has been successfully delivered to more than 4000 parents from across Victoria.  ABCD groups for parents are continuing right across the State.
