After a decade of collaborative work, 2018-19 saw the launch of our PracticeWorks model. Designed to help define good child and family practice, support it, and continually improve on it, PracticeWorks enables a tailored approach to work, using data-informed decision making to develop and implement programs that best support parenting. In 2018-19 we successfully supported a number of commissioning departments, agencies and services to develop new models of working using the PracticeWorks methodology.
During this year we also expanded our work with the internationally recognised SafeCare program, shown to significantly reduce recurrence of child abuse and neglect. We worked with the NSW Department of Communities and Justice to trial the program at 14 sites across NSW with great outcomes in coaching support and training.
And, through the Reframing Parenting project, we continued to advocate for effective parenting support by igniting change in how the child and family services sector communicates about parenting.
Other highlights for 2018-19 include:
- As part of our ongoing partnership with Emerging Minds we supported a new project to identify initiatives that are likely to have the biggest impact on improving child mental health.
- We contributed to policy discussion by giving evidence to the Federal Government’s Parliamentary Inquiry into Sleep Health Awareness about the need for greater awareness and support for parents grappling with sleep issues.
- We advised the Victorian Government on the design of the State’s first baby bundle – a package of practical products and important information on child health and development, to be distributed to parents welcoming their first baby.
- We played a key role in assisting the Australian Government Department of Social Services to raise awareness about the importance of the first 1000 days of life, from conception to two years, by developing a new ‘First 1000 Days’ section on the raisingchildren.net.au website.
