Why your weekly movie night is a really good thing
Family rituals give children and adults a sense of belonging and are an important part of life.
Speaking on the Feed Play Love podcast produced by Babyology, Parenting Research Centre and raisingchildren.net.au Principal Specialist Derek McCormack says rituals around what we do can help signify ‘who we are’ as a family.
“Rituals come in all shapes and sizes,” he says.
“They can be a walk to a particular park, regular cake and coffee, a family festival or something you always do when you are on holidays together.
“Whatever the ritual contains it gives family members a sense of security and predictability. We are in this moment again and this is somewhere I belong.”
Mr McCormack says it’s important to remember that rituals can change. So it’s good to check in with family members, particularly to give children a say in what the family will do.
