We are a child safe organisation

The Parenting Research Centre is committed to child safety and wellbeing in all aspects of our work. We provide guidance, training, and support for all who work for us to enact our Code of Conduct for a Child Safe Organisation.

We follow and regularly monitor our compliance to government standards and legislative requirements for attention to child safety, including the Australian Human Rights Commission’s National Principles for Child Safe Organisations.

When our work brings us into contact with or affects children, we assess any risks and establish relevant management processes.

Our commitment to Reconciliation

Our Reconciliation Action Plan aids a deeper understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ culture and history.

We are committed to the Reconciliation process and ensuring that our work and organisational development is informed by a deeper understanding and knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ culture and history. The Parenting Research Centre Reconciliation Action Plan is an important part of this commitment.

Our Reconciliation Action Plan working group includes staff at all levels of the organisation, and our advisory group includes key Aboriginal leaders working in the family support sector.

The Parenting Research Centre supports establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.

We support the Voice because it is through working and learning together that we will realise the changes needed to improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

As an organisation strongly engaged in reconciliation with First Nations Peoples, we believe that the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice is an important step forward on this journey.

Our Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC)

About our HREC

The Parenting Research Centre (PRC) Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) is accredited by the National Health and Medical Research Council and reviews applications from within our organisation.

The HREC is responsible for the ethical review of projects involving human participants. It operates under delegated authority from the PRC Board, in accordance with its Terms of Reference, and reports to the Chief Executive Officer through the Committee Chair.

Role and responsibilities

The HREC works to ensure that:

The Committee considers the ethical implications of proposed research and supports sound, responsible and respectful research practice across PRC.

Membership and expressions of interest

The HREC has at least eight members, with membership reflecting the requirements of the National Statement. This includes:

  • an experienced Chair
  • at least two community members
  • a health or care professional
  • a person who performs a pastoral care role
  • a practising lawyer
  • at least two members with relevant research experience
  • additional members where specialist expertise is required.

PRC welcomes expressions of interest from suitably qualified people interested in joining the HREC. Vacancies may not always be available, but expressions of interest can be submitted at any time to hrec@parentingrc.org.au.
